The trio manage to infiltrate the Ministry of Magic and recover the locket but the safety of 12 Grimmauld Place is compromised and they flee.
Harry discovers that his sword is a fake and decides they must find it as it is able to destroy Horcruxes. However, Ron is becoming disillusioned by the lack of any real plan and leaves the group. Harry and Hermione go to Godric’s Hollow to hunt for the sword but are ambushed by Voldemort. They manage to escape but in the fight Hermione accidentally destroys Harry’s wand.
In the Forest of Dean, a Patronus leads Harry to an icy pond containing the real Gryffindor sword. As Harry attempts to retrieve it the locket around his neck begins to tighten and strangle him. Fortunately Ron decides to return and manages to save Harry and destroy the Horcrux.
The Deathly Hallows
The trio learn from Luna’s father that the mysterious symbol in Hermione’s book from Dumbledore represents the Deathly Hallows: the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Invisibility Cloak. Harry is convinced that Voldemort is after the Elder Wand so he can defeat Harry.

Voldemort opens Dumbledore’s tomb and steals the Elder Wand believing it to be the only wand powerful enough to allow him to defeat Harry Potter. Voldemort unintentionally reveals to Harry through their mind-link that another Horcrux is hidden in Hogwarts.
The Battle of Hogwarts
Harry, Ron and Hermione apparate to Hogsmead where Aberforth Dumbledore sneaks them into Hogwarts. Harry alerts the staff about Voldemorts impending attack on Hogwarts as the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore’s Army and other students prepare for the battle.

Harry sees into Voldemort’s mind again and sees him in the Shrieking Shack. He sees Voldemort telling Snape that he believes the Elder Wand does not work correctly unless Voldemort becomes its true master. He believes this can be done by killing Snape, which he does. Just before Snape dies he gives Harry his memories that reveal his true allegiance to the Order and Dumbledore due to his deep love for Harry’s mother Lilly Potter. Harry also realises that he himself is the final Horcrux.
Resigned to his fate of death, Harry heads for Voldemort’s camp. Voldemort strikes Harry with the Avada Kedavra curse and Harry ends up in a strange place unsure if he is alive or dead. He meets Dumbledore who explains that the Horcrux within Harry has been destroyed but as Voldemort can’t die with his Horcruxes remaining neither can Harry die with his blood in Voldemort.
Harry regains consciousness but feigns death as Voldemort carries him to the castle as a prize. As the fighting resumes Harry hides under the invisibility cloak. Harry reveals himself and challenges Voldemort, realising he is not the true master of the wand, but in fact Harry is. As Voldemort casts a killing curse it rebounds back into him and Voldemort is destroyed.
Nineteen years later, Harry and Ginny, and Ron and Hermione are both married and have children who are off to Hogwarts.
