Plot Outline
In the beginning…
At the start of the fourth book Harry Potter sees the Riddle manor’s elderly caretaker, Frank Bryce, murdered by Voldemort as he discovers Peter Pettigrew and Lord Voldemort plotting Harry Potter’s death.
Shortly after Harry departs for the Quidditch World Cup along with Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and the rest of the Weasleys’. After the match, Death Eaters (Lord Voldemorts servants) storm the camp site, panic ensues and the trio escape into the forest where they can see the Dark Mark.
The Goblet of Fire
Professor Dumbledore announces the Triwizard Tournament is to be revived and held at Hogwarts. It is a dangerous competition where one difficult task is given each term.
The Goblet of Fire chooses one student from each of the participating schools. As the tournament is so dangerous only students over 17 may enter. Cedric Diggory is chosen as Hogwarts student, Fleur Delacour is selected for Beauxbatons Academy and Viktor Krum is chosen for Durmstrang Institute. Surprisingly the Goblet then selects a fourth student to compete: Harry Potter - even though he never entered and is actually underage.
Harry is helped through the tournament by Alastor Moody, the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. The first task is to retrieve a golden egg from a dragon. With the help of Moody, Hagrid and Hermione, Harry decides to fly past the dragon and grab the egg. He manages to succeed and is awarded high marks.
The students must attend the Yule Ball, a Triwizard Tradition. Harry had wanted to take Cho Chang but then learns she is to go with Cedric Diggory and takes Parvati Patil, while Ron takes her twin sister. Ron expresses jealousy over Hermione being taken by Viktor Krum, and her unexpected beauty.
The second task requires the competitors retrieving something important to them from Hogwart’s lake. For Harry this is Ron, whom he manages to rescue but when he resurfaces he sees the others are still trapped under the lake and goes back to help them.
For the third task the competitors must navigate through a maze full of dangerous obstacles to find the champion’s cup. During the task Harry and Diggory help each other out and when they find the cup, agree to lift it simultaneously. When they lift the cup they find it has been replaced with a portkey and are transported to old cemetery. Awaiting is Peter Pettigrew and the deformed shape of Lord Voldemort. Pettigrew kills Diggory and Harry is tied up. He watches a bizarre ritual which restores Voldemort’s power.
Voldemort then challenges Harry Potter to a duel but unknown to either of them their wands share the same core and as the wands spells interlock a Priori Incantatem effect occurs, which momentarily confuses Voldemort, allowing Harry to escape back through the portkey with Diggory’s body.
After Harry returns, Moody imediately takes Harry up to his office and is in fact an imposter and tries to attack Harry. However, Snape, Dumbledore and McGonagall arrive just in time. ‘Moody’ is in fact Barty Crouch Jr. who had escaped Askaban and used Polyjuice Potion to transform into Moody.
Dumbledore quickly revives the Order of the Phoenix in wake of Voldemort’s return and urges old friends and allies to join the cause.
