Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood prince is the sixth book in the Harry Potter stories by author J.K Rowling. It was published in 2005.

Plot Outline

In the beginning…

Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters leak havoc throughout Britain. Snape receives a visit from Draco Malfoy’s mother and annoyed sister Bellatrix. Narcissa swears to an Unbreakable Vow to protect Draco during his mission Voldemort has sent him on and to finish the task if Draco is unable to.

Harry Potter is moved from the Dursleys to the Weasleys by Dumbledore and spends the summer along with the Weasleys and Hermione. During the summer, Harry spends more time with Ginny and experiences mixed emotional feelings towards her.

Hermione, Ron and Harry receive their O.W.Ls and no one is surprised that Hermione passes with high grades. However, both Ron and Harry fail History of Magic and Divination.

When they return to Hogwarts they are surprised to find Professor Snape as their new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. As the year progresses more Death Eater attacks occur. Ron is accidentally poisoned but Harry’s quick thinking manages to save him. Ron and Hermione had fallen out but Hermione is so upset over Ron’s poisoning that they become friends again. Harry also realises his true feelings for Ginny when he sees her kissing her boyfriend.

Horcruxes

Dumbledore begins tutoring Harry privately using his Pensive to view memories about Voldemort’s past. Dumbledore theorises that Voldemort has split his soul into seven pieces, storing six in horcruxes making him immortal.

Harry’s feelings for Ginny erupt after the Quidditch final, which Gryffindor win, when he spontaniously kisses her. They then begin to date.

Harry suspects that Malfoy is a Death Eater and tells Dumbledore he is not concerned as he had Snape investigate. Dumbledore tells Harry he has found another Horcrux and would like Harry to accompany him to destroy it. They manage to retrieve the Horcrux but Dumbledore is seriously weakened by a poison he drank to get the Horcrux.

The Half-Blood Prince

When they return to Hogsmeade they see the Dark Mark above Hogwarts and borrow broomsticks to return speadily. They see Malfoy in the Astronomy Tower who reveals he helped Death Eaters enter Hogwarts. Members of the Order arrive and battle Death Eaters in the hallways below.

Death Eaters appear at the tower and urge Draco to fulfil his mission, to kill Dumbledore. Snape arrives, and as Dumbledore is still weak, kills him with an Avada Kedavra killing curse. Enraged by this Harry chases after Snape, who reveals himself as the Half-Blood Prince, and they have a short duel before Snape escapes with Malfoy.

Harry retrieves the Horcrux only to discover it is a fake and had already been destoryed by someone with the initials R.A.B.

The school year ends abruptly with Dumbledore’s funeral. Harry decides to leave Hogwarts forever to destroy the remaining Horcruxes that Dumbledore had asked him to. Ron and Hermione vow to go with him. Harry also ends his relationship with Ginny so as to protect her from Voldemort.
